The PLASRECO project has been launched to develop PFAS-free, silicon-based functional coatings for packaging, leather, and textiles, addressing growing restrictions on PFAS in the EU due to persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation. The solution relies on atmospheric plasma technology to deposit nanometric layers, reducing chemical use while remaining compatible with porous and flexible substrates such as leather, paper, and textiles.
PLASRECO is carried out in collaboration with Inescop (Footwear Technology Centre) and AIMPLAS (Plastics Technology Centre). The project aims to design new organosilicon monomers tailored for plasma application, ensuring coating durability, stability, and reproducibility under demanding conditions (abrasion, humidity, thermal changes). The results are expected to support industrial adoption, improve competitiveness, reduce environmental impact, and help companies comply with evolving EU chemical safety requirements.
